MEDIA RELEASE
Defending NSW Amateur Champion Michael Smyth (The Australian), 2008 Amateur Champion Michael Raseta (Mona Vale Golf Club), 2009 NSW Medallist Lincoln Tighe (Moore Park) and National Squad member Brendan Smith (Pymble Golf Club) head a quality national and international field that will tee it up on Australia Day to contest the 2010 NSW Amateur Championship. The Championship is one of the major national amateur tournaments, and is a National and World Ranking Event.
This year’s field is of exceptionally high quality, with leading amateurs from around the world including New Zealand, Scotland, Wales, America, England and Poland and many inter-state players. World No. 12 Matt Haines from England is expected to figure prominently.
Current Australian squad member Jason Scrivener (Mandurah Golf Club) and last year’s runner-up, Tim Hart (Indooroopilly) are likely to be the main contenders from the interstate visitors. The international presence is the strongest in many years, with New Zealand having sent its top four amateurs across to join the talent from the U.K.
Apart from these more senior players, there is also host of well credentialed local NSW junior talent who will be keen to take the titles and push their claims for State selection later in the year including Bonnie Doon juniors, Jordan Zunic and Jake Higginbottom.
“This championship attracts the best amateur golfers in the state, both young and old. With the final two players having played 6 grueling days of golf, it really is a test of skill, mental strength, and endurance”, remarked Graeme Phillipson, General Manager of Golf Programs at the NSWGA.
“This year we’ve got a mixture of people from interstate as well as internationals. It really is going to be a great tournament.”
